Workin' it: Make the new fall trends work for you!

New fall trends and the way to make them yours.

Hey, you trendy types! Wondering how the latest trends are gonna work on you, or work into your wardrobe? Me too! When I buy an item, I may love it in the store but is it going to work with what I have currently occupying my closet? Tops—duh, jeans go with everything, but what about for work?

Right now, black, white and red are a huge trend. Personally, I'm not a red person. Pale and freckly just doesn't seem to work with it (at least it doesn't for me). But red accents can be nice with a crisp white shirt. Or perhaps a black dress with a red shoe—ohmahgosh. Love that. Just planned an outfit in my head. I digress.

This trend works really well with another decade-delish one trotting down the runway—Mod is back. You can see more about that one here. Work it however you feel comfortable. It's really about contrast and color accents. So, feel free to change it up with a great pop of a cobalt blue or those nice jewel tones. But if you don't like that trend, have no fear—there's more.

Animal prints have been big for fall for awhile. More subtle prints on a nice wrap dress or skirt, and perhaps a bolder one on accessories like a handbag or shoe. Please don't go head-to-toe leopard unless you plan on meowing at people on Halloween. No one should wonder if, at first glance, you escaped from the zoo. A snakeskin shoe can go really great with just about anything, especially if it's a neutral color.

Plaids are also returning from a warm-weather hiatus for the coming months. If you're ready to invest in a jacket to keep ya cozy, try an all-over plaid belted cape, beautiful blazer or, of course, a classic trench with plaid accents. If you're not into doing a large item like a coat, try a scarf or casual look by pairing plaid shirt with skinnies or a nice skirt for work.

Not into plaid, reds or the "meow" factor? Not to worry. There's always something out there for you. You can also just update with simple accessories like necklaces, a great cuff, or the perfect pair of shoes and boots. If you don't want to completely overhaul your wardrobe for the trends from one season, translating certain elements of the trend into accessories might be the option for you.

As always, the most important thing is to stay true to your personal style. If it isn't you, leave it behind. Something will come along that will be the perfect addition to the wardrobe that is totally your style.
