Cal Ripken World Series: One Local Team Survives Elimination Day

Calvert County, MD is one of eight teams to advance out of pool play in the international youth baseball tournament being played in Aberdeen.

Elimination Day came at the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen Wednesday, and one local team made it into the round of eight.

The field of 16 was cut in half, and Charles County—the Maryland state champions—advanced to the tournament's quarterfinals as the second seed in the American Division. Oahu, HI is the top seed, representing the Pacific Southwest region.

The National Division top seed is Ohio Valley representatives Southeast Lexington, KY. The Mid-Atlantic representatives from Clifton Park, NY are the No. 2 seed.

The International Division is seeded one through four: Japan, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Korea.

  • Dominican Republic 14, Canada 2: The game was called after the third inning due to the 10-run rule.
  • Clifton Park, NY 11, Waite Park, MN 1: Peyton Johnson hit a three-run homer for the Mid-Atlantic region champs.
  • Kennewick, WA 7, Hudson, NH 4: Dillon Plew struck out 11 for Washington, but neither team advanced.
  • Oahu, HI 4, Weimer, TX 2: Texas scored twice in the bottom of the first, but Hawaii advanced by scoring four unanswered runs.
  • Korea 7, Australia 0: Woo Jin An, Keon Hee Choi and Won Min Park combined for 11 strikeouts.
  • Japan 2, Mexico 0: The two undefeated teams in international play met in a classic, with Taisei Takeoka's two-run homer in the fourth inning providing all the offense.

The tournament began with opening ceremonies Aug. 12, and games have been ongoing at the four fields around the complex. There are no games scheduled for Thursday, and play resumes with the quarterfinals Friday.
