Cal Ripken's Son Heads for Major League Baseball

Ripken fans have more to look forward to, now that Cal Ripken Jr.'s son was just drafted by a team in the region.

The Washington Nationals selected Ryan Ripken in the 15th round of the Major League Baseball draft over the weekend, according to Fox 45.

Nationals manager Matt Williams told the Associated Press that Ripken has "great bloodlines, great work ethic" and the team is "happy to have him."

The 20-year-old is the son of Hall of Famer and former Baltimore Oriole The Washington Post referred to as "the most beloved player in mid-Atlantic history."

In 2012, the Orioles tapped Ryan Ripken in the 20th round, at which time he went to college instead, according to The Baltimore Sun. Ripken went to South Carolina, then transferred to Indian River in Florida, where his batting average was .321 this season. His swing is "very reminiscent of his father's," according to Bleacher Report.

If he signs with the Nationals, Ryan Ripken would be the third generation to hit the big leagues, as his grandfather Cal Ripken Sr. was with the Orioles before father Cal Ripken Jr. and uncle Billy Ripken joined the team.
