Comic books entered the pop culture arena in the 1930's due to the popularity of superhero characters Superman, Batman, and Captain Marvel.

Who was the first “Superhero”?
A superhero (also known as a super hero) is a fictional character “of unprecedented physical prowess dedicated to acts of derring-do in the public interest.”(National Periodical Publications v. Empire Comics, New York Court of Appeals, April 21, 1954.) The first real superhero was likely The Phantom in 1936 followed by Superman in 1938. Since then many superheros have surfaced. A timeline of comics and funnies was written by Shmuel Ross and Jennie Wood.
