"Unpack your adjectives" and whip out the "Interjections" so you can rave about the latest production from the Havre de Grace Middle School's Drama Club!
Any child of the '70s and early '80s will immediately recognize these titles. It was an era when cartoons aired only once a week, on Saturday mornings, the one day that parents did not need to struggle to get their kids out of bed. And little did we children of that era know, but in between Hanna Barbara and the Super Friends, we were actually LEARNING SOMETHING! What?! Education on the weekend? Yup. And all the while we thought we were just being entertained.
That was the beauty of Schoolhouse Rock, those short cartoons set to catchy tunes that made us sing along while we learned about proper grammar, biology or the operation of the United States government (I still find myself humming "Just a Bill" from time to time). Now all those classic ABC shorts have been mashed together into a stage musical, and you can see the "Junior" version this Friday and Saturday at the Havre de Grace Middle School.
Directed by Laurie Starkey, "Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr." tells the tale of young teacher Tom Mizer. As Tom prepares for his first day, he watches in disbelief as his thoughts come to life before his eyes in the form of Schoolhouse Rock skits. Before all is said and done, Tom is geared up and ready to teach.
You don't need to have grown up in the era of bell bottoms and disco to appreciate the catchy tunes and innovative mesh of entertainment and education. So mark your calendar now to join the Havre de Grave Middle School Drama Club for "Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr." Shows are Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5 at 7:00 pm. Tickets are only $5.00 per person.
