Crabs--Yummmm!

Our Colombian guests try crabs for the first time. Visit my blog to see photos!

Fellow host family Steven and Katie with their kids came over last night to have crabs with us. (See their blog!) I was eager to do crabs while our guest Leidy was here visiting from California, as she’d never had them before either. So we got our crabs from Richards in Bel Air, and we were surprised to find inside our bag some ears of corn as well. Yay!

Of all three of our girls, Monica was the one who really wanted to try the cangrejos, and she did a great job. She sat next to me and I helped her learn how to pick the crabs. After not too long though, the spice got to her. Note to self: Next time, wash the crabs first!

Diana and Jeimy were convinced they wouldn’t try them. They were with Leidy—they thought the idea of them was gross. But what great sports they were! Leary of those hard shell spidery-looking things, they sat at the table and let me convince them to at least try a little bit of meat. I pulled some of that pure gold from the back fin for each of them, and they liked it! So they started picking crabs too. With a little help of course.

Diana was the one who surprised me the most! She is somewhat timid with trying new foods, convinced she won’t like them. Often after a little encouragement, she will try a food and end up liking it. Sometimes of course, not so much (like the asparagus—come on, I had to try!), but often she will. This was one of those times! I’m so glad.

Jose was eager to try the crabs and probably lasted the longest with them while we were eating. I am pretty sure Lina just couldn’t bring herself to try them, but that’s okay. We also had hot dogs. And potato chips—her favorite.

So seriously—have you ever wondered who the first person was to figure out that you could eat crabs? They must have been AWFULLY hungry. They really do look awful! I am so impressed by these girls and their spirit of adventure. They were rewarded with really yummy crab meat, but still just getting over how they looked must have been such a challenge for all three of them. I love that they did!
