DUI Checkpoint Planned For Hatem Bridge

Here's another reason to drive sober or designate a sober driver this weekend in Harford and Cecil counties.

There will be a sobriety checkpoint between Harford and Cecil counties this weekend, police said. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) announced the DUI checkpoint is slated for the night of Friday, Feb. 2.

Officers will be posted at the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge toll plaza in Perryville to ensure drivers are not impaired, and to provide education about the laws regarding driving while intoxicated.

Those who are found to be above the legal blood alcohol limit of .08 will be arrested.

"The MDTA Police will continue to conduct sobriety checkpoints and high-visibility enforcement to increase awareness about the importance of not driving while impaired," said MDTA Police Chief Colonel Jerry Jones.

By law, authorities must announce sobriety checkpoints. A Supreme Court case in 1990 determined citizens' rights against unlawful search and seizure are not violated if checkpoints are publicized in advance.
