Ex-Eagle Monroe Brown Dead at 41

Monroe Brown, a former Aberdeen High School basketball star, has died, according to multiple reports. He was 41.

Brown, who starred at before going on to Penn State and eventually a career as a college coach, had battled drug use in recent years.

According to The York Dispatch, Brown—known as "Monnie"—died in his Havre de Grace home on March 9.

Police could not confirm at the time of the incident that Brown was involved.

An Explore Harford story from March 6 noted that Brown was due for a preliminary hearing on March 28 after being released on $15,000 bond.

The same article noted that Brown was deemed a "drug kingpin" after he and 38 others were "arrested in November 1997 in connection with an alleged drug ring that police said was responsible for distributing cocaine with a street value of more than $1.2 million in Harford County."

Before building a name for himself at Penn State, Brown was a star basketball player at .

The Penn State athletics website noted that Brown was a contributor on teams that "generated one of the most successful eras in Nittany Lion basketball history."

According to the same GoPSUSports.com report, Brown was a four-year starter for the Nittany Lions and a team captain in 1992. In those four years, Penn State won 20 games each year, and compiled 87 wins—the most in any four-year span in school history, the report stated.

According to the Penn State athletics site, Brown is the 16th all-time leading scorer in school history with 1,244 points. His 239 steals are still second all-time high, and he was one of just three players in school history to achieve 1,000 points, 400 rebounds and 400 assists. 

He served as a Penn State assistant in the 1995-96 season, when Penn State finished a school-best 12-6 in Big Ten play.

A viewing is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at in Havre de Grace, followed by a 1 p.m. Mass at . The burial service will be private, according to Lisa Scott Funeral Home.
