To help prevent fire deaths, the Susquehanna Hose Company will be out in the community looking at smoke alarms.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — Three out of five fire deaths are in homes without working smoke alarms, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. To prevent serious consequences in the event of a fire in Havre de Grace, the Susquehanna Hose Company will be checking smoke detectors at homes in the city.
Smoke detector checks will be conducted on Stokes Street Thursday night, the hose company reported.
Crews will start at 6 p.m. and cover the part of Stokes Street between Commerce and Fountain streets, officials said.

A new Maryland law took effect Jan. 1, 2018, requiring battery-operated smoke alarms be updated to 10-year sealed battery units. By sealing the battery inside the alarm, officials say the device becomes tamper-resistant and will save lives.
Maryland's Smoke Alarm Law also requires the replacement of all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old. This applies to both hard-wired and battery-operated smoke alarms.
