Former Darlington Volunteer Fire Company Chief James Terrell Passed Away

Terrell was first chief of Harford County's hazmat team, past Darlington fire company chief and retired HarCo emergency operations manager.

Chief James W. Terrell, a leader within Harford County emergency operations and the fire service, passed away last week. He died suddenly on Sept. 18.

Terrell was the first chief of the Harford County Hazardous Materials Response Team. He served as the manager of the Harford County Division of Emergency Operations from 1985 to 1999, according to Harford County Emergency Management.

He retired in July 1999 after more than 30 years of service “with distinction” within the fire service and Harford County, according to emergency management.

In addition to his service with Harford County Government, Terrell served for several years as chief of the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company.

Viewing and visitation with family will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, at Darlington Volunteer Fire Company’s House 1 at 2600 Castleton Road, in Darlington. The fire department will hold its memorial service at 7 p.m. The department asks that people carpool and use the social hall entrance. Harford County officials advise there may be traffic congestion on Route 1 due to the services.

A “Celebration of the Life of Chief James W. Terrell” will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Darlington Volunteer Fire Company’s House 1 at 2600 Castleton Road in Darlington. Internment will follow, at the Slate Ridge Cemetery located near Peach Bottom, PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may go to the Jim Terrell Memorial Fund at the National Bank of Rising Sun, 3535 Conowingo Road, in Darlington.
