Girls Lacrosse: Warriors Advance

Warriors used two goals late in the first half to build lead against Perryville

The final 40 seconds of the first half in Saturday's Class 2A-1A South region quarterfinal gave the Warriors girls lacrosse team all the momentum it needed for a 10-8 win against Perryville.

“That tends to be the joke at halftime: ‘It’s OK guys, good thing we’re a second-half team,’” Warriors coach Sarah Scholl said. “They tend to come out stronger in the second half.”

Havre de Grace will host the Class 2A-1A region semifinal Monday evening at Harris Stadium. The opponent will be either Elkton or Patterson Mill, pending a result from Saturday morning.

Maddie Hewitt scored three goals, while Carly Thompson and Cara Nieberlein scored twice. Katie Thompson, Hailey Dean and Candace Knight added goals for the Warriors.

Hewitt scored the second of her three goals with 40 seconds remaining in the first half to tie the game at four. With about 18 seconds left in the half, the Warriors inbounded the ball from behind the Perryville goal, and Katie Thompson made a run from the sideline to the goal to score with 2.9 seconds remaining for a 5-4 Havre de Grace edge.

Scholl said having a mental boost makes all the difference for her team—the waning minute of the first half was the key Saturday.

“Coming into the half with the lead, not being tied up or one behind, that gave them confidence. They need the mental edge,” Scholl said. “That was definitely helpful.”
