Havre de Grace Studio Displays Veterans' Art

For the month of November, Glyph in Havre de Grace is featuring the work of veterans.

"It’s a good time to reflect," Glyph co-owner Joseph Smith said.

Smith, who is a Havre de Grace City Councilman, runs the art and design shop on N. Washington Street with partner Don Starr.

"Some of the exhibits in our show are about soldiers who made sacrifices," Smith said, speaking with Patch after the Nov. 12 Veterans Day ceremony in Tydings Park. "You have to pause and think about it. It’s a solemn duty."

He mentioned art that a Marine made from his old military uniform.

Using a pulping machine, Cpl. Nick Collier processed scraps from the uniform pants he wore to Afghanistan and other places into paper, on which he drew his portrait, according to Air Force Times. The picture is now inside Glyph.

"I've had many veterans in my family, so obviously it’s personal," said Smith. His father served in Korea and World War II, his stepfather was a signalman for the Navy and his cousin served in Vietnam.

Said Smith: "You can't do enough or say enough to recognize the sacrifice."
