Grenade Draws Bomb Squad to Whiteford

WHITEFORD, MD – Bomb experts were called to Main Street in Whiteford Thursday morning after a grenade was found inside a home, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

An auctioneer reviewing an estate in the 1600 block of Main Street saw the grenade in the attic, inside a foot locker, the fire marshal reported.

After taking the grenade outside the home, the auctioneer requested assistance from 911 at approximately 11:23 a.m., according to the report.

Bomb technicians from the fire marshal’s office determined the grenade was inert based on diagnostic testing, officials reported.

The grenade was identified as “Little Brown Jug,” made in France, according to the report. The late owner of the home had served in the Navy during World War II, according to the fire marshal.

During the two-hour investigation, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office provided assistance, closing a section of Main Street, according to the fire marshal.
