Gun Assault Leads To Drug, Weapons Charges: HdG Police

The suspects were arrested after extensive searches, a foot chase and vehicle stop, the Havre de Grace Police Department reported.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — Police said two cousins were charged in an assault involving a gun Wednesday that temporarily put Havre de Grace Elementary School on alert and netted drugs, cash and a weapon.

The case began when police responded to the 900 block of Revolution Street for an assault Wednesday afternoon in which two people allegedly used a handgun to threaten a man.

Authorities extensively searched around Havre de Grace Elementary School, where the school resource officer was notified of the situation and safety precautions were in place, according to the Havre de Grace Police Department.

Surveillance video from the area helped officers identify the two suspects, who were not immediately located.

Hours later, police said an officer chased and apprehended one of the suspects in the 100 block of Seneca Avenue.

Derek Stansbury, 19, of the 400 block of Village Drive in Havre de Grace, was found with an amount of cocaine fit for distribution, according to police.

He was charged with six offenses: first-degree assault, second-degree assault, possession of more than 10 grams of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute narcotics, having a handgun on his person and using a firearm in a felony. He was charged and released, according to online court records, which show he has a preliminary hearing May 18 in Harford County District Court.

The second suspect was apprehended nearby.

Devon Stansbury, 19, of the 300 block of Oxford Avenue in Aberdeen, was in a taxi cab that was stopped by police in the 1200 block of Revolution Street, authorities reported.

In his possession at the time were a loaded 9mm handgun, a large amount of cocaine and marijuana and more than $1,500 in cash, police said.

Devon Stansbury faces eight charges: first-degree assault, second-degree assault, possession of more than 10 grams of marijuana, possession of drugs with intent to distribute, possession of drugs other than marijuana, possession of narcotics with intent to distribute, having a handgun on his person and using a firearm in a felony. He was booked and released and is slated to appear May 18 for a preliminary hearing in Harford County District Court as well.

The Havre de Grace Police Department was assisted by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police in bringing Devon Stansbury into custody.

According to Corporal Dan Petz, the two suspects are cousins.
