“I don’t need to look like a cover girl!”
The problem affects much more than physical appearance. Obesity contributes to higher rates of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. We are in the midst of a healthcare crisis!
Much of this health crisis could be improved if people would chose to eat more whole (or minimally processed) plant based foods, and less processed food products and animal foods (meat, chicken, fish, eggs, dairy milk and cheese).
Converting to a more plant based diet is not as difficult as it sounds!
The Havre de Grace Community boasts several opportunities to experience and access health enhancing plant foods:
-The Havre de Grace Farmers Market every Saturday morning from 9am till noon at Hutchins Park (at the foot of Congress Avenue). A beautiful waterfront market!
-The Havre de Grace Green Team holds a monthly Whole Foods Plant Based Potluck for Green Team members (anyone can be a member!) Held at 6pm on the third Sunday of each month in The Meeting Place at Bahoukas GreenJoy. This is a wonderful opportunity to taste a variety of plant based food dishes. Each attendee brings a dish serving 6-8 to share (no animal products, minimal oils). The next scheduled potluck is July 19th. More info: www.hdggreenteam.org
-The Havre de Grace Green Team Community Garden Initiative: Four community gardens are located in various areas of the city. Community members adopt a plot or two for the season and grow their own food! More info: www.hdggreenteam.org/communitygarden
-“Food for Life” (FFL) classes are available in downtown Havre de Grace (Held in The Meeting Place at Bahoukas GreenJoy 467 Franklin Street). Barbara Wagner, RD, LDN is a Certified Instructor for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine ( www.PCRM.org ). Next series:
