Harford County Turns Attention to Below Freezing Temperatures

Harford County officials urged drivers to be extra cautious Tuesday and Wednesday due to potentially icy roads.

"As the temperature drops, roads and bridges are susceptible to freezing, which may lead to accidents," Harford County Emergency Manager Rick Ayers said. "Motorists are urged to use caution as the potential for 'black ice' increases due to projected subfreezing temperatures."

It will be below freezing Tuesday night and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service, which forecast low of 17 and a high of 30 degrees in Havre de Grace.

Pfc. Jeff Gilpin, spokesman for the Havre de Grace Police Department, encouraged drivers to remain cautious. "Be patient, take your time, drive slow and if it is not needed, don't go," Gilpin said Tuesday.

The State Highway Administration offered these 10 tips for winter driving:

• Clear ice and snow off your vehicle.
• Use extra caution at ramps, bridges and intersections.
• Increase following distance.
• Take your foot off the gas if you start to skid, and steer in the direction of the skid. (Do not hit the brakes!)
  
• Treat inactive traffic signals as four-way stops.
• Don't expect to drive as you would during normal weather.
• Ensure all head and tail lights are operational.
• Try to move safely onto the shoulder if your vehicle becomes disabled.
• Don't drive through standing water.
