Harford Sheriff: Beware Scammer Posing as Deputy

Scammer demands prepaid payment card from callers, stating he has warrants out for their arrest.

The Harford County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement on Oct. 2:

Over the past week, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office has received several phone calls from Harford County residents concerned about a potential scam phone call they received.

First, the scammer tells the potential victim he is a deputy with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office and there is a warrant out for their arrest. The scammer continues by saying the potential victim can pay a fine to avoid jail time. To pay the fine, the suspect instructs the victim to go to a local store, put money on a Green Dot card or prepaid credit card and call back with the card information.

The Harford County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public while we do serve warrants that may have a monetary amount attached to them, we would never require someone to pay a fine with a Green Dot card or prepaid credit card.
