Havre de Grace Man Appears On MTV's 'Catfish'

A terminally ill Havre de Grace man was the subject of a popular MTV show this week.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD - The hosts of MTV's show "Catfish" said they were impressed by the story of long-distance love from a man in Havre de Grace. In fact, they were so moved that they traveled to Harford County to meet him.

The man named "Robert" wrote to the show's creators saying that he was on borrowed time due to his health, and the woman he fell in love with over the internet had fallen off the grid.

"I've been in and out of hospitals over the past few months," Robert wrote in an email to the show's hosts. "I don't really know how long my life will be, and I don't want to live with any regrets."

Robert, 23, said he has been paralyzed from the neck down since his immune system attacked itself when he was 15.

In 2014, he said he went into cardiac arrest, died twice and was in a coma for four days. Doctors recently told him he will become immune to antibiotics, he said, so he doesn't know how long he has left to live.

Robert said he met "Ashleigh" of Tennessee online; and after two years, including talking on the phone every day, he proposed marriage. It was then she told him she lied about who she was, and they stopped talking.

Drawn in by his situation, "Catfish" hosts Nev Schulman and Max Joseph flew to BWI.

They filmed themselves driving on I-95, heading for the MD 155 exit en route to their assignment: Robert.

After conducting some background research, the show's hosts brought Ashleigh from Tennessee to Havre de Grace, where the two met face-to-face for the first time and she said she was insecure about herself and had sent him pictures of someone that were not her.

Ultimately, Robert said he at least wanted to be friends with Ashleigh, and she went home; two months later, he said in a follow-up interview that he was talking to another woman who lived 30 minutes away.

While there may not have been a love connection, there was success: the MTV show did convey the correct way to say "Havre de Grace" to America after the hosts fumbled with the pronunciation.
