Havre de Grace To Rededicate Tydings Park War Memorial

The monument off Commerce Street is the oldest World War I memorial in the state of Maryland, city officials say.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — To recognize the updates made to the Tydings Park War Memorial, the city of Havre de Grace is planning a rededication ceremony. The event will also coincide with the centennial of World War I.

In the beginning of the year, the city made improvements to the park off Commerce Street. Among the updates were installation of a stone wall, stone walkway, star design, up lighting and wing walls. City officials say that it is the oldest World War I monument in the state of Maryland.

“One of the strongest priorities of my administration has been to honor the sacrifices made by our
service men and women,” Mayor William Martin said in a statement. “Honoring those who serve our country should be a 365-day a year commitment."

The city will celebrate its veterans with a rededication ceremony for the World War I monument in Tydings Park. The event is planned for 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 6. The U.S. declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917, officials say, so the date has historical significance.
