Horse Named Havre de Grace Sells for $10 Million

Havre de Grace, a retired racing mare who won Horse of the Year in 2011, sold for $10 million at an auction in Kentucky on Nov. 5, according to The New York Times.

The horse was the third priciest racing mare in thoroughbred history, reported the Lexington-Herald Leader.

Bidding started at $500,000 at the auction until Mandy Pope, owner of Whisper Hill Farm in Florida, placed the winning bid of $10 million, according to Daily Racing Form. "She was absolutely gorgeous...you look at her, and she’s everything a racehorse could be," Pope reportedly said of Havre de Grace.

The horse named for the city in Harford County was owned by Rick Porter of Delaware, who bought her for $380,000 as a yearling in 2008, reported ESPN.

Havre de Grace the horse retired due to an ankle injury in spring 2012. She earned more than $2.5 million on the racetrack, reported Daily Racing Form.

Her future involves a stallion, according to The Daily Gazette, which reported her new owner had a few in mind.
