Maryland State Police Target 4 Areas for Memorial Day Weekend

State troopers will be out in force for Memorial Day weekend, with several areas getting special attention, according to a statement from Maryland State Police.

To reduce crashes in which speed, alcohol and any other aggressive driving violations are contributing factors, police announced the following initiatives:

Operation Millipede—Troopers and police officers will be stationed along the Interstate-95/I-495 corridor from Delaware to Virginia state lines. Troopers will also be stationed on I-70 and I-68 for traffic and criminal interdiction initiatives, police said.

Operation Road Runner—Law enforcement will target speeding motorists along I-495.

Operation Showboat—Troopers will be on the US Route 50 corridor from the Chesapeake Bay to Ocean City targeting aggressive driving.

SPIDRE (State Police Impaired Driving Effort)—Police will crack down on drunk drivers in parts of Prince George's County where drunk driving crashes are prevalent.

In addition to speed, good behavior and sobriety, police will be checking for one other thing specifically: seat belts.

May has been designated "Occupant Safety Month," so there will be zero tolerance for any unrestrained occupants, police said.

"It is the responsibility of everyone driving this weekend and every weekend to make safety a priority," Col. Marcus L. Brown, superintendent of Maryland State Police, said.

How should drivers stay on the right side of the law this holiday weekend?

"Do not drink and drive, remove distractions from the vehicle, don’t drive aggressively and remember to always use your safety restraints," Brown said.
