New Compost Center Debuts In Havre de Grace
Havre de Grace now offers a place for people to compost, with the opening of Harford County's first municipal composting facility.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — Food scraps no longer have to go to waste in Havre de Grace. In collaboration with the Havre de Grace Green Team, the city of Havre de Grace cut the ribbon recently on its new compost center.
This is the first municipality-based food waste disposal program in Harford County.
Food accounts for more material put in landfills than anything else, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). About 30 to 40 percent of the food supply goes to waste, the FDA says.

By taking their food to the compost center, citizens divert it from the landfill and can prevent harmful greenhouse gases from forming as the food decomposes.
Veteran Compost of Aberdeen will collect and replace the compost bins once a week in Havre de Grace. The food scraps will be made into compost, which enriches the soil with nutrients.

The Havre de Grace Compost Center will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily near Hutchins Park at 100 Congress Avenue.
Since Friday's ribbon cutting, people have already been making use of the resource. The Havre de Grace Green Team spotted some visitors to the farmers market Saturday stopping by to drop off their kitchen scraps.
