New Express Toll Lanes on I-95 Will Open in Three Weeks

Drivers can use the lanes for free during the first week they are open.

According to the Maryland Transportation Authority, traffic reporters will have less to talk about after Dec. 6, due to the opening of the I-95 Express Toll Lanes.

The transportation project, which cost more than $1 billion, created additional lanes along 8 miles of the busy section of the interstate, from I-895 to north of MD 43.

The addition of two northbound and two southbound lanes are designed to decrease congestion and provide more reliable travel times, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority. Drivers can opt to take the express lanes by paying a toll.

While drivers familiarize themselves with the new lanes during the week of free rides, the Maryland Transportation Authority will have the opportunity to test the tolling equipment under actual traffic conditions.

Tolls will begin to be collected at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

Video cameras, rather than traditional toll booths, will collect toll fares using EZ Pass.

Rates vary based on the time of day and range from $0.70 overnight (9 p.m.–5 a.m. daily) to $1.75 during rush hour (defined on I-95 south as 6–9 a.m. weekdays and on I-95 north as 3–7 p.m. weekdays).
