Once Upon a Mattress at the HdG High School

"In a little while, just a little while" it will be time to see Prince Dauntless the Drab, the outgoing Princess Winnifred, the arrogant Sir Harry, strong Lady Larkin, mute King Sextimus and the selfish antagonist, Queen Aggravain.

"Throughout the land no one may wed 'til Dauntless shares his marriage bed." That's the theme of "Once Upon a Mattress," a musical variation on "The Princess and the Pea" playing tonight and tomorrow at the Havre de Grace High School auditorium and presented by the High School drama and music programs.

Nobody in the kingdom is permitted to marry until a suitable mate is found for Prince Dauntless.  What is "suitable?"  That is up to the devious Queen Aggravain, who tests each potential wife with a series of unfair, seemingly impossible to pass tests.  The whole kingdom groans as princess after princess is rejected, perhaps no one more so than Lady Larkin and Sir Harry, who have recently learned of a new addition soon to join their as yet unwed family.  But new hope comes in the form of spunky Princess Winifred, who captures Dauntless' heart.  But how will she ever pass the Queen's test?

Will Harry and Larkin be able to marry before certain things become noticeable? Will the mute King Sextimus ever speak again, something which (thanks to a curse) he can only do "when the mouse devours the hawk?"  Will the audience be able to stop laughing and humming along to the memorable tunes? (I can answer that last one for you: Not likely)

So come on out to Havre de Grace High School for this hilariously entertaining show.  Showtimes are tonight (February 28) at 7:00 pm and tomorrow (March 1) at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm.  Tickets are $10.00 each, $7.00 for children and seniors.  Here's hoping to see you there "In a little while, just a little while!"
