Power Outage in HdG Impacting Traffic Signals: Police

Havre de Grace police officers may be out directing traffic on Wednesday.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD – Due to a power outage in the city of Havre de Grace, police said multiple traffic signals were not functioning Wednesday afternoon.

Officers are at the ready to cover intersections if there is a need, according to a statement from the Havre de Grace Police Department.

There were more than 1,300 BGE customers reportedly without power downtown, with restoration time estimated to be 5:45 p.m.

It’s the law in Maryland to come to a stop at an intersection where there is a broken traffic light.

A driver approaching a nonfunctioning traffic signal from any direction at an intersection is required to stop at a clearly marked stop line before entering any crosswalk or the intersection.

After stopping, the driver must yield to any vehicle or pedestrian in the intersection and remain stopped until it is safe to enter and continue through the intersection.

If drivers come to an intersection where a police officer is directing traffic, they should obey the officer, regardless of the signal indicated on the light.
