Rosie Gamatoria, 93, of Havre de Grace

Rose Mary Gamatoria, a lifelong resident of the city of Havre de Grace, died peacefully at her home on Oct. 2, 2015. She was 93. She was the firstborn child of the late Umberto Primo DiGiamittorio and Guilia Malatesta DiGiamittorio.

She was the loving sister of the late Joseph Dominick Gamatoria and Victoria Gamatoria Hartmann, and is survived by her youngest brother Charles C. Gamatoria of Havre de Grace. She was the loving aunt to Carl Hartmann Jr. and his wife Susan, Julia Weidow and her husband Harold; Louis Hartmann and wife Rachel; Charles C. Gamatoria Jr. and his wife JoAnn; Stephen J. Gamatoria and his wife Patricia; and Angela Gamatoria Mergle and her husband Robert. She is also survived by great nieces and nephews—Charles III, Joseph, Justin, Scott, Jennifer, Lauren, Angel, Steve Jr., Alyssa and Anna—and nine great-great nieces and nephews.

As a teenager, Rose worked for Elsie and Eugene Goll at their family’s bakery and nannied the Goll children while Mrs. Goll attended to the bakery with her husband.

Although she never married, Rose’s commitment to family was unprecedented. She and her brother Joseph constructed a home and cared for their parents throughout their lives. She was employed as a stenographer at Aberdeen Proving Ground from 1942 until 1971, at which time she retired to care for ailing mother.

A graduate of Havre de Grace High School, Rose was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church since 1922. She was a member of the Susquehanna Hose Company Ladies Auxiliary and volunteered for many years at Citizens Care Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial and a celebration of her life will be held on Friday, Oct. 9, at 10 a.m., at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, 615 Congress Avenue, Havre de Grace.

Interment will be held at Harford Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen.

Father Dale Picarella will officiate.

Contributions may be made in her name to St Patrick’s Catholic Church, 615 Congress Avenue, Havre de Grace.

Pallbearers are Phillip Powell, Rodney Swam, Paul Ishak, Nicholas Sarvino, Jimmy Sirkis and Rocco DiGiovanni.
