Second Grocery Store Coming to Havre de Grace

Save-a-Lot is returning to Havre de Grace.

The grocery store chain, which , is opening a new store at the location of the former Acme at the intersection of U.S. Route 40 and Lewis Lane.

The store could open this spring, though , manager of economic development for , said there is no timetable for an opening.

There's also no set number of jobs coming to the store, but Simmons said the previous Save-a-Lot employed 14 people.

The entire shopping center is owned by The Cordish Companies. The store will be owned by Mario Incollingo, who also operates the Egg Harbor Market in Egg Harbor, N.J.

The Acme closed at some point in the last five years, though Simmons didn't have an exact date at her disposal Friday morning.

Havre de Grace's downtown area remains without a large grocery option after the Save-a-Lot closed in 2010. There are no plans in place for another downtown grocery store in the immediate future.

Residents have clamored for more fresh food options than offered at the only current grocery store in Havre de Grace—, which is also located on Route 40.

While the return of the Save-a-Lot to Havre de Grace leaves downtown residents without a store in walking distance, it could revitalize what once was the primary shopping center in Havre de Grace.

Other chain businesses have vacated the shopping plaza, which is now dominated by a large .

Downtown residents have held out hope since the Save-a-Lot left its spot near that another store would come into the downtown area.

Comments and conversations on Patch have swayed from those desiring a high-end, fresh-food option, like Whole Foods, to trendier options like Trader Joe's, while others suggested the community could come together to forge a co-op in the downtown area.

The former Save-a-Lot building remains vacant.
