Susquehanna River Advocates Walk from PA to Havre de Grace

A monthlong trek along the Susquehanna River will come to a head this weekend in Havre de Grace.

Supporters of the Susquehanna River have been walking, biking or boating from Pennsylvania since May 25 in an effort they call the "Susquehanna River Honor Journey."

Their intent is to "honor, preserve, support and heal the Susquehanna River so [it] can continue to share its waters with future generations of life," according to the Susquehanna River Honor Journey website.

Running through New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland, the Susquehanna River was ranked the nation's most endangered river in 2011 by American Rivers, an environmental advocacy group based in Washington, DC.

According to American Rivers, the Susquehanna suffers as a result of natural gas drilling. It is also impacted by deforestation, dam blockage and pollution, according to the York Daily Record.

Along their 64-mile "honor journey" from Pennsylvania, the Susquehanna River supporters have held lectures, Native American ceremonies and artistic celebrations to become more connected to nature.

On June 21, the Susquehanna River Honor Journey will host a summer solstice ceremony at Susquehanna State Park from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a potluck in the Deer Creek picnic area, and people are welcome to bring their river songs, poems and prayers, according to the event listing on the group's website.

At 8 a.m. on June 22, there will be a 7-mile "honor walk" from Susquehanna State Park to Tydings Park in Havre de Grace, followed by a noon potluck in the park.
