Tennis: Warriors Head to Regionals
Havre de Grace went 10-2 in 2011, and sends three to regionals

Two days before the MPSSAA regionals, Warriors tennis coach Troy Travers stood courtside as a parent approached.
“You can take them any time,” Travers said, pointing to students on a nearby court. “We’ve been done.”
Roughly 30 minutes after practice concluded, about a half-dozen players remained at the courts tucked behind the endzone at Harris Stadium—none of them slated to compete in Westminster in Saturday’s regional event.

Such dedication is a testament to the job Travers has done in bringing the Warriors to where they stand today. Havre de Grace finished the regular season 10-2, finishing in fourth place for the sixth straight season.
“We had one heck of a season,” Travers said. “We had a lot of parents out, cheering, going nuts. It was a little different than in years past. They knew what was going on. I’m excited about what’s going to happen in Westminster.”

Senior Ben Getz and junior David Beck will compete in boys singles, while Beck and junior Marissa Moran will compete in mixed doubles.
While they are the only Warriors still competing, the trio doesn’t make up the only standouts from the regular season.
Sophomore Sam Richardson teamed with Beck in boys doubles to go undefeated in division play during the regular season.
Junior Tyler Cook also went undefeated in regular season divisional play.
Travers captured all the highlights from the season in a music video set to David Bowie’s “Pressure.”
The Warriors lone losses came to Aberdeen, which won the Susquehanna Divison and will move up to play in the Chesapeake Division next season.
Travers’ hope was to win and move up so that next year’s squad—which misses just two seniors from this year’s version—would be able to face the tougher competition of the upper division.
They came very close.
In fact, one of Aberdeen’s standout players told Travers the only reason the Eagles were able to persevere against Havre de Grace was via forfeits in specific events. The Warriors were forced to give up events because of roster depth.
“We forfeited half the season,” Travers said. “We went in sometimes and they’d only have to win two. But we pulled it off.”
Saturday, three of the Warriors best will try to pull off another remarkable feat—an individual region title.
