Theater and Film Classes for All Ages Starting this Month

HdG Drama Guild kicks off its 10th season with theater troupes and its annual film workshop

The Havre de Grace Drama Guild has a lot of programs under its umbrella. The Lewis Lane Players are its community theater group which has put on recent productions of “Doubt,” “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Bull in a China Shop,” and which will be performing the Pulitzer Prize winning “Lost in Yonkers” this November. But some people do not realize that the Guild also offers classes during the school year, both in theater and film.

Three programs are starting up this month. For those interested in theater, both the Teen Troupe (for grades 7 through 12) and the Youth Troupe (grades 3 through 6) start up in just over a week. The Teens meet Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00, with the Youth meeting on Wednesday afternoons from 4:30 to 6:00. Classes start on September 13 or 14 and are at the Havre de Grace Activity Center, 351 Lewis Lane. The Youth will once again be instructed by Brittany Rosenkrans (who has led the troupe for the last several years), while the Teens will be taught by Ken Coughlan, an experienced actor of both the stage and film who also has directing and producing credits in theater and movies on his resume. In the Spring, all the Guild’s children’s troupes come together to perform our annual musical. This year the Guild is hoping to produce “The Music Man, Jr.”

For those who are interested in the big screen, the Guild also boats KEG Productions under its wing. Each fall, KEG hosts an introductory film workshop for ages 13 through adults. The class meets every Saturday and learns how to make a film from start to finish, including sessions on screenwriting, cinematography, sound, lighting, editing, and of course acting. The workshop kicks off in just about one week, September 10, from 9am to 4pm, and meets each Saturday after that through the end October from noon to 4pm. The class will actually create a short film of its own in early November.
