Tips for Avoiding Enterovirus: Maryland Health Officials

The first case of enterovirus D68 in Maryland was confirmed this week.

Maryland health officials confirmed this week that a case of enterovirus D68 has been diagnosed in the state. The respiratory virus can affect anyone but may rapidly sicken children, potentially resulting in hospitalization.

“Now that this virus is known to be in Maryland, it is important that we all take reasonable steps to limit its spread and control its impact,” said Maryland Health Secretary Joshua Sharfstein, M.D. To that end, the Maryland Department of Mental Health and Hygiene offered these tips for prevention:

  • Wash hands with soap and water.
  • Cough or sneeze into a sleeve or tissue.
  • Pay particular attention to children with asthma.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, especially with unwashed hands.
  • Be aware of wheezing and other symptoms of respiratory distress in children.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces like toys and doorknobs.
  • Keep sick children at home, or stay home if you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick with respiratory illness, particularly steering clear of hugging, kissing and sharing eating implements.
  • Stay up-to-date on vaccinations such as the flu shot.

Because there is no specific treatment for enterovirus D68, medical professionals say they treat the symptoms. For example, if there is wheezing, they treat the wheezing.
