What's Open, Closed in Havre de Grace for Labor Day 2015

As you celebrate Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 7, here’s the rundown of holiday closings and a brief history lesson.

Labor Day was officially recognized by Congress in 1894 as a federal holiday and has been celebrated the first Monday in September to honor all who toil and contribute to the nation’s economy with their work, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

There’s an old-school taboo about not wearing white after Labor Day. So where the heck did it come from? It’s hard to say, but Time magazine reports that some historians believe it had to do with the well-heeled wearing white during their summer vacations, then changing back to dark colors when they returned to the sooty, dusty city.

As far as what’s open and closed, if it’s official, it’s probably closed; if it wants your patronage, it’s probably open!

City Council: The council meeting normally scheduled for Monday will take place Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Trash Pickup: All collections in the city of Havre de Grace will be delayed by one day. Recyclables will be picked up on Friday. Yard waste will be picked up Saturday. Residents in apartment complexes and other areas where trash is collected by a private contractor should check with their providers.
