Wheelchair Company Delivers for Havre de Grace Teen

A wheelchair manufacturer sent a gift to a Bayview Estates teen whose wheelchair was taken.

A Havre de Grace teen has new wheels thanks to a California company.

Convaid, which manufactures wheelchairs, sent Matthew Schwartz, 18, a brand-new Convaid Safari Tilt wheelchair so he could travel distances without using supports. Schwartz has cerebral palsy and depends on the wheelchair to be able to participate in activities like going to the mall or summer camp, which he is attending next month.

Schwartz had the same wheelchair before, but it was reported missing from Bayview Estates on April 3.

When Convaid representatives read a Patch article about the family's plight—the wheelchair cost thousands of dollars—it offered to replace it free of charge.

"We are so very grateful...to everyone who helped make this replacement Safari Tilt possible," Sandy Schwartz, Matthew's mother, wrote to Convaid in an email this week thanking them for the $4,000 custom wheelchair.

"It is such a sense of security to have this for Matthew," Sandy Schwartz said. "He'll certainly need it this summer."
