There is also some wide criticism of “rescue” as a motivation for adoption. Confession time: That was my personal, primary motive. Twenty years ago on this brand-new platform called “the internet”, I stumbled upon photos of orphaned, American teens. Their blurbs all cried out the one single message: “I just want a family. I know it’s almost too late, but I am really hoping for a family to call my own.” I thought to myself, “I want you!” The desire took root in my heart at that time and grew over the years. It wasn’t until we met the sparkling adolescent who would become our daughter 15 years later that God answered the cry of my heart. I wanted to provide a home for the homeless, hope for the hopeless, and family for the fatherless. We are encouraged in the Word to care for the widow and the orphan. There are many ways to do that. Adoption is one of them.
