Woman, 2 Dogs Killed In Trailer Fire In Elkton

The fire broke out around 9 p.m. Friday, officials said. One resident was able to escape the blaze.

CECIL COUNTY, MD — A woman and her two dogs were killed Friday night in a trailer fire in Cecil County, state fire officials said.

According to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal, firefighters from the Singerly Fire Company and surrounding departments responded to 1936 E. Old Philadelphia Rd. in Elkton around 9 p.m. after receiving a call about a trailer fire.

When firefighters arrived, they were met by a man who lived in the trailer and was able to escape. He told officials his girlfriend and their two dogs were still inside the home, the fire marshal said.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in less than 10 minutes and later discovered the woman's body inside the trailer.

"Tragedies like this remind us of the importance of fire safety, especially during the winter when the risks increase," said Acting State Fire Marshal Jason Mowbray. "We must also remain vigilant as we light our homes to stay warm. Always ensure smoke alarms work, don't leave space heaters unattended and never overload electrical outlets."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The woman was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, who will identify her and determine the cause of death.
