Healing from an Achilles tendon injury can be a long process, and it is important to determine what kind of injury you’ve sustained in order to plan the best course of treatment. The pain and stiffness caused by Achilles tendinitis usually responds to rest and ice. Tears and ruptures, however, may require long-term immobilization of the ankle (cast or boot), and in some cases, surgery.
There are steps you can take to decrease your chances of injuring your Achilles tendon:
· Stretch before and after exercise.
· Wear shoes that fit well and offer good support.
· Know when to take a break. If your heel or the back of your calf is hurting, give it a rest.
· Build up your level of physical activity gradually.
You may have injured your Achilles tendon if you experience any of the following:
· Pain in the heel and calf, especially when flexing and pointing toes
· Swelling, tightness and/or tenderness in the heel and calf
· A snap or popping sound (common when there is a rupture)
The good news is that most sufferers of Achilles tendon injuries are able to get back in the game, although it may take weeks or months depending on the severity of the injury. If you suspect an Achilles tendon injury, have it checked out right away, so that you can get back to doing what you love as soon as possible.
Be well!
