Decorating Dangers

How to stay safe while decking the halls.

I love holiday decorations! Twinkling lights make even the coldest, darkest December night magical.

But, as I drive around and see some of our Timonium neighbors struggle up teetering ladders to string lights on their rooftops, I’m reminded that enthusiasm for the season can turn dangerous.

Here are some tips to help you avoid decorating disasters:

Ladder Safety

  • Ensure that your ladder is in good shape and can hold the appropriate amount of weight (you and your supplies/tools).

  • Place the ladder on firm ground and have another person with you to hold the bottom and act quickly in case of an emergency.

  • When you’re on the ladder, center yourself between the rails—no leaning! Take the time to climb down and move the ladder, if necessary.

  • Never stand on the very top of the ladder.

  • Wear sturdy, slip resistant shoes.

  • Consider if you are really the best person for the job. If heights make you dizzy, get someone else to hang the lights.

  •  Lights

    • Check the condition of your lights in advance. Any with frays or cracks in the cords should be discarded.

    • Only use lights outdoors that are specifically designed for that purpose. Those for indoor use may have thinner insulation that won’t stand up to the elements.

    • When securing the strings of lights, be sure to use insulated hooks or clips—not nails or staples, which can become electrified if they pierce the cable.

During this festive time, it’s tempting to combine celebrating and decorating, but please don’t decorate under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol and ladders don’t mix. It’s hard enough to stay safe on a ladder sober. Navigating heights inebriated could be deadly.

Despite all precautions, accidents still happen. If you have a non-life threatening fall, wound, cut or burn, visit us at Doctors Express of Timonium. We’ll get you fixed up and back to enjoying the season.

    Be well!
