Jan. 21 Snow Totals in Maryland: Patch Readers Weigh In

How close was your guess?

We asked Patch readers in Maryland to guess how much snow would fall from Tuesdayโ€™s storm? Readers weighed in on Facebook with their predictions.

There seemed to be some skepticism about the weather forecasts prior to the start of the snow.

โ€œSince they closed school already I'm guessing no snow,โ€ joked Kelly Marie on Annapolis Patchโ€™s Facebook page.

Erika Murray predicted โ€œa dusting, at bestโ€ on Dundalk Patchโ€™s Facebook page and Nancy Ambrozewicz hoped for โ€œsunny and 73 degrees.โ€

The consensus from the Owings Mills-Reisterstown Patch Facebook page was also to add several inches to the predicted amount.

Estimates were all over the place on Towson Patchโ€™s Facebook page. Antero Pietila predicted a whopping 84 inches of snow, โ€œgive or take,โ€ while Amy Mazer Fenton predicted a modest 3 inches.ย

Pete Repo Katsikides posted on Havre de Grace Patchโ€™s Facebook page that he had his โ€œblizzard fingers crossed.โ€

On Bel Air Patchโ€™s Facebook page, many overestimated snowfall totals of 10 inches or more. ย However, Bobby Weaver was the closest to being accurate with his prediction of a โ€œsolid 7.5 inchesโ€ as was Tammy Cowman who predicted the same on Westminster Patchโ€™s Facebook page.ย

The National Weather Service (NWS) recorded 8 inches in Westminster and 8.5 in Bel Air.

Predictions of 8 inches were on the mark on Parkville Patchโ€™s Facebook page and Catonsville Patchโ€™s Facebook page. NWS recorded 6-8 inches in Baltimore County.

Fred Niziol gave the most accurate guess on the Columbia Patch Facebook page. He predicted five inches at BWI; NWS recorded 5.1.

Joe Bendaโ€™s guess of 4 to 6 inches on Annapolis Patchโ€™s Facebook page was right on target for what the area received, too, as was Carrie Miller Hilliardโ€™s guess. ย She nailed it with her guess of 4.5 inches on Severna Park Patchโ€™s Facebook page.

Guesses on Edgewater-Davidsonville Patchโ€™s Facebook page ranged from 0 to 12 (that was actually one jokesterโ€™s guess) but Bob Bradshaw, Regina Reese-Nokes and Tiffani Moreland Moore were closest.

Many guesses on Anne Arundel Patchโ€™s Facebook page were in the actual snowfall range of 4 to 7 inches but Dennis Raymond was hoping for more snow. His guess: 8 to 12 inches.

Jeni Berkebile wrote โ€œ12 inches! just 'cause I want itโ€ on Crofton Patchโ€™s Facebook page and she wasnโ€™t the only one who wanted a double-digit snowfall amount. Jan Miletich wrote: โ€œOh, this one looks like a sure thing, coming in from the west! I'm going with 10 inches for Crofton!โ€

The hopeful guess of Jennifer L. Everhart-Sparr in Perry Hall was 16 inches, while others predicted no snow or 8-9 inches.

Some estimates were on the very low side. Patrick Bennett predicted 2-4 inches on Gaithersburg Patchโ€™s Facebook page. On Elkridge Patchโ€™s Facebook page, Aaron Donnally predicted 2 inches and Robert Judge predicted 10 centimeters.

Yes, centimeters.
