Here is a rather amazing story of how easy it is for Americans to get not just one, but several Obamaphones free along with free cellphone service under the FCC’s Lifeline program. If you recall, we have previously written about this issue and the widespread fraud involved, when a story first appeared in the Wall Street Journal that reported on anearlier FCC audit where “41% of their more than six million subscribers either couldn’t demonstrate their eligibility or didn’t respond to requests for certification.”
In this case, Jillian Kay Melchior, a reporter for the National Review, to her credit, decided to investigate this program, and find out how easy, whether you qualify or not, it would be to obtain these free phones. I should mention that there are now 13.8 million active subscribers to the Lifeline program, which costs American households about $2.8 billion annually.
