Padonia Elementary Seeks Assistance for New International Families

The school is looking for community parents who would help the families adjust to American life.

is recruiting parents from the school to assist new families entering the community from another country.

Specifically, the school is requesting parents of origin help families coming from their native country acclimate to a new environment.

"We are hoping to build a network," said Kate Wolf, principal of the school. "As our families assimilate, they need assistance learning about the American culture."

For example, ESOL teacher Molly Glassman said these mentors can help new families learn the importance of attending parent-teacher conferences, fill out basic paperwork and even serve as a translator. 

"Interpreters are in high demand," Glassman said. "There are times when another family can really make a difference."

The school has previously had established parents assist new families, but Glassman said this is the first year it's actively recruiting.

Padonia International Elementary School has students from and about 100 of the approximately 450 students speak more than one language.
