Phew, now at least we can sleep better on that front. But back to the blankets — there are several versions of them on the market that claim to ease symptoms of stress, anxiety, insomnia and beyond. Some studies have shown weighted blankets to be effective at relieving anxiety-related issues that can prevent sleep, and many occupational therapists have used similar products utilizing deep pressure techniques on younger patients.
At the 2007 American Occupational Therapy Association's Annual Conference, Tina Champagne, Brian Mullen and Debra Dickson presented their research on the safety and effectiveness of adults using weighted blankets. The three different studies they conducted indicated varying amounts of success. As was noted in the OT professionals' presentation, people "have different tendencies & preferences," and, "No one intervention will work for everyone."
