Head-On Crash In Cockeysville Involved Stolen Dump Truck: Police

One of the victims had to be airlifted for medical treatment, police said, while the driver accused of causing the crash tried to run away.

COCKEYSVILLE, MD — Police said two people were hospitalized following a head-on collision in Cockeysville Monday afternoon, and one is facing charges. Officials allege the driver who caused the crash was trying to elude authorities in a stolen dump truck.

At 2:28 p.m., Baltimore County police officers said they were dispatched to Lake Vista Circle at Cranbrook Road, where there was a serious crash.

One person was trapped and required rescue before being flown by Maryland State Police helicopter for treatment, officials said. A second person was also taken for treatment of less serious injuries, police reported.

According to Maryland State Police, the less seriously injured person was driving a stolen Ford F550 that its troopers had been trying to stop.

Around 2 p.m., Maryland State Police said its troopers were alerted by the Baltimore City Police Department that the stolen dump truck was headed north on Interstate 83.

Troopers later found the vehicle in a Walmart parking lot off York Road in Cockeysville, without anyone inside.

When a man got into the truck, troopers on foot approached him and he tried to run them over, forcing them to jump out of the way to avoid being hit, according to police.

The driver took York Road south from the Walmart and was allegedly speeding in the center turn lane as he tried to get away, turning left onto Padonia Road and left onto Cranbrook Road while police followed with their lights and sirens activated.

On Cranbrook Road at Rossbrooke Circle, police said the stolen vehicle crossed the double-yellow line and hit a Nissan Versa head-on. The suspect got out and tried to run away but was apprehended by troopers, police said. He was taken to Sinai Hospital for examination of what were believed to be minor injuries, Maryland State Police said, and he was expected to be charged at the Golden Ring barrack Monday night.

The driver of the Nissan Versa was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, according to officials. That person was in "bad shape," WJZ reported.
