Soap Lady Prefers Natural Ingredients
Dee Statham started making soaps after retiring from the corporate world two years ago.

Boredom is what spurred Monkton resident Dee Statham into the soap- making business.
After retiring two years ago following a long career in corporate America, most recently as a contract manager for AT&T, Statham found herself getting restless and looking for a new way to occupy her time. She did a brief stint in the real estate industry before getting into cosmetics.

"I've always been a real cosmetics buff," Statham said. "I've always made creams for myself."
Statham credits her Italian mother for her interest in beauty.

"My mother was a skin care nut," she said. "When I was a kid, she'd put olive oil on her skin."
Statham started the Soap Lady business after receiving positive feedback from family and friends who were impressed by her creations.
"They were my guinea pigs," she said. "When I got a good reaction, I realized I could do this full time."
Her signature scent is fresh linen but she also has a host of other scents such as clove, cinnamon and pine, which she said are perfect for the .
Statham aims to make her soaps visually appealing as well by using decorative molds.
"We have a big equestrian population in the area, so horse-themed soaps are very popular," she said.
She also creates decorative flowers, shoes and pink flamingoes,
And Statham's soaps aren't what you'd typically find at the mall. She said many popular national brands use detergents that are harsh on the skin, but she prefers natural ingredients such as shea butter, oils and glycerine.
"They're not only pretty, but good for your skin as well," she said.
