One Dead In Hunt Valley Industrial Accident: Officials

Emergency officials said a man died near Cockeysville Friday morning after he fell down an elevator shaft.

HUNT VALLEY, MD — Emergency officials said a man died Friday near Hunt Valley in an industrial accident. Rescuers were called to the scene at 8:33 a.m., where authorities said the victim was trapped in an elevator shaft.

Michael David Zeller, 31, of the 800 block of Creek Road in Essex, was pronounced deceased after crews removed him from the confined space, officials said.

The Cockeysville Volunteer Fire Company was the first at the scene, where its ambulance was dispatched for a reported fall; once its crew arrived at the building under renovation in the unit block of Schilling Road, it requested assistance from additional personnel, including the Texas station's search and rescue team.

Within 15 minutes of the Cockeysville medics being on the scene, authorities said that Zeller was freed; he was pronounced deceased at the scene, officials said.

Based on the preliminary investigation, authorities said Zeller fell about 20 feet and became trapped between a wall and a counterweight from one of the elevators.

The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MOSHA) and the Baltimore County Police Department are both investigating the case.

The death of Zeller on Friday morning was the second workplace-related death this week in the Baltimore metro area. On Tuesday, a 19-year-old man became buried under debris in a trench in Baltimore City and died as well. He was working on a sewage line at the time. MOSHA is also investigating that case.
