Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:
- Memorial events and observances will be held nationwide on Saturday to honor the victims and remember the legacy of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden plan to visit all three sites where the attacks unfolded: The World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C., and the field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed. Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Shanksville with second gentleman Doug Emhoff before they join the Bidens at the Pentagon. (USA Today)
- Students returned to the classroom in Prince George's County Wednesday for the start of a new school year as coronavirus cases continue to climb across the country. Prince George's County has put into place safety protocols to try to keep children healthy and in class. Universal masking mandates apply to all students and staff inside buildings and on buses regardless of vaccination status. Social distancing will be put into place when possible and all buildings will be cleaned at the end of each school day. (FOX 5 DC)
- Governor Larry Hogan announced on Sept. 9 that Project Restore, the State of Maryland's $25 million economic recovery initiative to revitalize vacant retail and commercial spaces across the state, is now accepting applications. Applicants can apply on the Project Restore website now through October. The application portal may close sooner if grant requests exceed the funding available. Applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. (Maryland.gov)
