Here are the top five stories in Laurel today:
- Maryland state officials and local leaders spoke at a news conference on Thursday that was sponsored by the Maryland Citizens' Health Initiative. They urged young adults 18-34 to take advantage of a new state subsidy that is designed to make health insurance more affordable. During open enrollment from Nov. 1 to Dec.15, those who do not have health insurance can buy a plan on the state's exchange. (MarylandReporter.com)
- U.S. Army Sergeant Bryan Edwards has received the keys to his new, mortgage-free Pulte home in the Watershed community located in Laurel. The home was donated by PulteGroup's Built to Honor program, which provides the gift of a new home to wounded veterans and their families across the country. (Yahoo Finance)
- Marylanders need to prepare for a rainy weekend that may result in flooding. According to a new report released by Prince George's County, there are approximately 4,000 structures county-wide that are vulnerable to flooding in a 100-year-storm event. Most of those are in older, inner beltway communities. (WTOP)
- Governor Larry Hogan recently urged Maryland residents and visitors to monitor weather forecasts and remain on alert as heavy rains, moderate to major flooding, and hazardous winds affect portions of the state Friday through Sunday. Gov. Hogan said he is asking all Marylanders and visitors to take precautions to remain safe, "especially if you are in low-lying areas prone to flooding." - Mayor Craig A. Moe is recently announced that beginning Monday, the open-enrollment application period for the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Grant Program will begin. The application period will remain open until Nov. 30, 2021. The City of Laurel ARPA Grant Program provides financial support for specific projects and programs to for-profit or non-profit organizational entities that were impacted by COVID-19.
