Here are the top five stories today in Laurel:
- Each year M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George's County takes time to celebrate our Hispanic community starting on Sept. 15 which is the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. Over 19% of our county's population has roots from Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, Spain, or one of the many other countries in the Spanish-speaking world. Celebrate this rich culture at one of the many events commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month. (Press Release Desk )
- The top money-winning jockey in Maryland this year, Sheldon Russell, will have surgery to repair an injury to his right foot suffered in a pre-race spill Sept. 9 at Laurel Park. Russell got the news Monday after visiting an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle injuries at MedStar Health in Timonium, Md. (BloodHorse.com)
- On Tuesday, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission opened its eLicensing platform to the 17 entities that were named in Maryland's sports wagering law. These businesses will receive access to the online system to submit their applications to the MLGCC for sports wagering background investigations. Criminal and financial background investigations by the MLGCC are required for all applicants seeking sports wagering licenses. (WBOC TV 16)
- Yesterday, Governor Larry Hogan welcomed the nationwide Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Voices "Road to Recovery" series to Maryland. Local small business owners participated in a roundtable discussion on the challenges they face to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hogan administration has provided more than $2.1 billion in state economic relief measures to help small businesses keep their doors open and retain employees. (Maryland.gov)
- After seeing a surge in fatal shootings since the beginning of the pandemic, Prince George's County is launching a slate of gun prevention measures aimed at bringing down a recent spike in homicides. The county will also work with the faith-based community to organize job fairs and gun turn-in programs. County Executive Angela Alsobrooks called on Prince Georgians to partner with the county in the fight to keep the community safe. (WTOP)
