Amazon Buys Laurel Parking Lot + MD Minority-Owned Businesses

Here are the top four stories today in Laurel:

  1. Amazon.com Inc. bought a 3-acre parking lot in Laurel for $1.39 million. According to Maryland property data, Capital One Bank sold the lot at 6150 Chevy Chase Drive to Amazon on May 12. (Washington Business Journal: Subscription required)
  2. According to a January report on economic diversity from Business.org, Maryland ranked 7th nationwide in minority-owned businesses, with 19.3 percent of its small businesses owned by minorities. Of Maryland's 604,176 small businesses, 116,369 are owned by minorities, the report details. Those numbers, however, do not translate proportionately to Eastern Shore communities that are predominantly White. (MyEasternShoreMD)
  3. Two people performing work related to the Purple Line near the University of Maryland were hurt when they came in contact with a live electrical feeder inside a manhole on Wednesday. They were taken to local hospitals, Purple Line spokesman Ray Feldmann said in a statement. According to Feldmann, the incident is under investigation, and operations at this site on campus have been suspended until the investigation is complete. (WTOP)
  4. The Prince George's County Health Department is operating free vaccination clinics at public high schools in an effort to vaccinate students ages 12 and older ahead of the upcoming school year. A day after 104 shots were administered at Oxon Hill High School, a clinic was set up in the gymnasium at Fairmont Heights High School. (WTOP)
