Here are the top four stories in Laurel today:

  1. According to Patch reporter Andrea Lynn, Amazon has officially launched two new delivery stations in Maryland. There are now more than 300 new full- and part-time jobs that provide pay of $15 an hour and comprehensive benefits. Located in Upper Marlboro and Lanham, Amazon's new delivery stations will power its last-mile delivery capabilities to speed up deliveries for customers in Prince George's County. (Patch)
  2. According to Howard County Police, a woman died early Thursday morning in a single-car crash in Laurel. The crash happened after 2:30 a.m. on Johns Hopkins Road near Gorman Road. Police said the woman's car was heading east on Johns Hopkins when it veered from the road and struck a tree. She was pronounced dead at the scene. (CBS Baltimore)
  3. D Hatman Thoroughbreds' Grade 1-placed Off Topic continues her quest to become a stakes winner in Saturday's $100,000 Thirty Eight Go Go at Laurel Park. The 1 1/16-mile Thirty Eight Go Go for fillies and mares 3 and up, part of the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championship (MATCH) Series, joins the $100,000 James F. Lewis III for 2-year-olds and $100,000 Smart Halo for 2-year-old fillies on the nine-race program. (Paulick Report)
  4. Mayor Craig A. Moe and the City Council adopted an ordinance on June 28, 2021. This action resulted in making Juneteenth Freedom Day an official City of Laurel holiday and called for the creation of a Juneteenth Planning Committee. Mayor Moe is looking for volunteers for an Executive Committee to plan for a community-wide celebration in June 2022. After that, it will become an annual event. (City of Laurel)
