MD buys 15 acres of land next to Appalachian Trail and South Mountain State Park (tristatealert.com) β State leaders just approved funding to build a new 7-acre park at Anderson Corner in the City of Laurel, featuring an inclusive playground, trails, courts, and a pavilion. The project is part of more than $9 million in recreation and conservation grants statewide. For Laurel residents, this means a significant new public space is officially moving forward in your own neighborhood.

Celebration of Life for Wolfendale Sept. 9 at Laurel (bloodhorse.com) β Members of the Maryland Thoroughbred community are invited to a Celebration of Life for longtime trainer Howard Wolfendale on Wednesday, September 9, at 11 a.m. at Laurel Park's secondβfloor sportsbook in Laurel. Friends, family, and racing colleagues can gather there to honor his decades of accomplishments and lasting impact on the state's horse racing scene.

3. Laurel man killed after motor vehicle crash in West River (foxbaltimore.com) β A 34-year-old Laurel man, Keith Whitley Haines, died after his commercial truck left Swamp Circle Road in West River, struck poles and trees, and ejected him from the vehicle. Anne Arundel County police and fire crews responded Thursday afternoon, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Crash reconstruction investigators are still working to determine exactly what went wrong.

4. Dragonfly Gets Wired Up While Titan Landing Area Is Named (astrobiology.com) β Right now in Laurel, engineers at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab are wiring NASA's Dragonfly rotorcraft that will one day explore Saturn's moon Titan. The team just installed the spacecraft's complex electrical harness and is preparing to integrate more instruments. Meanwhile, the mission's Titan landing area has been officially named Ahmakiq Undae, honoring a wind-related figure from Mayan tradition.
